HISTORY
The Department of Microbiology was established in the year 1994 and M.Sc – Applied Microbiology was started in the year 1997. Research course M.Phil – Microbiology was started in the year 2013 and Ph.D – Microbiology in the year 2014. So far more than 650 UG graduates and 220 PG graduates were produced in this department. We are organizing and participating in various National Environmental Awareness Campaign (sponsored by Ministry of Environmental and Forest, New Delhi) every year in our college.
The department also organized National seminar and workshops every year. It is to provide quality education to our students and we are inculcating the science knowledge to them.
Our department of Microbiology occupies a prominent and paramount place in this institution. It is well equipped, well furnished and fully fledged both in faculty and infrastructure facilities for UG, PG, M.Phil and Ph.D levels. The glory of the department evidenced by producing 17 University Rank Holders so far.
The organizing secretary /co- coordinator as well as the Head of the department of Microbiology Dr.M.Prakash has been taking lot of efforts to receive the funds from various organizations and institutions to conduct the expensive National seminars on assorted topics. So far he received rupees 4, 62,000/-. In the year 2009, the fund rupees 75,000/- was received by our institution to conduct the National seminar on the topic “National Seminar on Role of rural educational Institutions for Quality Enhancement Measures in Higher Education” from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore and rupees 8,000/- from Ministry of Environmental and Forest, New Delhi to conduct “National Environmental Awareness Campaign on Climate Change” in our college. In the year 2010, we received rupees 80,000/- from TNSCST, Chennai to conduct Five days In-service Training Programme to secondary grade teachers. The Ministry of Environmental and Forest, New Delhi has funded rupees 10,000/- to conduct “National Environmental Awareness Campaign -2011” in our college and the same organization has funded rupees 9,000/- in the year 2012 to organize the “National Environmental Awareness Campaign on Biodiversity-2012”. We received a sum of rupees 5,000/- and 65,000/- to conduct “Creation of Science Awareness” Sponsored by Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology, Chennai. For the academic year 2013-2014, we received a sum of rupees 50,000/- from Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, New Delhi to conduct DBT sponsored National Seminar on “Recent Advances in Biotechnology and Applied Microbiology”.


OBJECTIVES
There is vast scope in the field of microbiology due to the advancement in the field of science and technology.
The scope in this field is immense due to the involvement of microbiology in many fields like medicine, pharmacy, diary, industry, clinical research, water industry, agriculture, chemical technology and nanotechnology.
After graduation the students may join industry, academia, and public health and play their role as microbiologists in a useful manner contributing their role in the development of the welfare society.
